Girl´s World Book Day Costumes

World Book Day Costumes for Girls: Favourite Storybook Heroines Come to Life

For many girls across the UK, World Book Day is the one school day where stories step right off the page. A favourite heroine, a magical character, a brave explorer, a classic book character... suddenly reading feels a little more exciting, and choosing the costume becomes part of the fun.

At Costumalia, our collection of World Book Day costumes for girls is inspired by well-loved books found in British schools, libraries and family bookshelves, with ideas for younger children, older pupils and friendship groups who want to dress up together.

Classic Literary Heroines Loved in UK Schools

Some characters never really go out of style, do they? Many girls choose heroines they have met in class or through family reading, especially when the story has stayed with them.

Popular World Book Day costume ideas include:

• Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables
• Alice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
• Heidi
• Sara Crewe from A Little Princess
• Wendy Darling from Peter Pan
• Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz
• Beth, Jo or Amy from Little Women

These are lovely choices for girls who enjoy classic stories, spirited characters and heroines with a bit of courage, curiosity or mischief about them.

Magical Characters That Girls Love

Fantasy is always a big favourite for World Book Day. There is something irresistible about a costume with a touch of magic, especially when it connects to a story children already know and enjoy.

Favourite options include:

• Isadora Moon
• Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch
• The Fairy Godmother
• Woodland Fairy
• Unicorn Princess
• Enchanted Queen
• Storybook Mermaid

These costumes bring colour, sparkle and imagination into the day without feeling too complicated. Add a wand, a cape, a crown or some themed accessories, and the character feels ready for the school gates.

Bestselling Book Characters for Older Girls

As children get older, they often want a World Book Day costume that feels a little more grown-up. Contemporary fiction, mystery stories and bestselling young adult books are a great place to start.

Trending choices include:

• Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games
• Alice Oseman-inspired characters
• Wednesday Addams from the original novels
• Nancy Drew
• Enola Holmes
• Lyra Belacqua from His Dark Materials
• Princess Academy characters

These options work especially well for upper primary and secondary school pupils who want a recognisable book character with personality, confidence and a story behind them.

Group Costume Ideas for Girls

World Book Day is even more fun when friends plan their costumes together. A group theme makes photos, classroom activities and the walk into school feel that bit more memorable.

Popular friendship group themes include:

• Alice in Wonderland: Alice, Queen of Hearts, White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat
• The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy, Glinda, Wicked Witch and Munchkins
• Little Women: Beth, Jo, Amy and Meg

These literary themes are a brilliant choice for friendship groups who want something coordinated, easy to recognise and a little different from the most common World Book Day costumes.
